Coal Road - Maitland to Werris Creek

Gavin Mclaughlan's route is available from the Train-sim.com library in coalrdp1.zip (16.3Mb, 24-Apr-03) and coalrdp2.zip (15.4Mb, 24-Apr-03). The route is based on the Main Line North and its principal function is to cater for large coal trains. Gavin's put up a lot of good information at his site, The Coal Road, including a map, and how the route was constructed.

For the activities included in the route, you'll need some locos and rolling stock, as detailed below.

  Installing
A little further along but still at the docks.
A little further along but still at the docks.

You need the six default MSTS routes installed and available for the Installme.bat file to run successfully after extracting the files from the zips. Train Store users, do the couple of required clicks to unstore the six default routes.

If, like webTrainSim, you haven't yet downloaded all the required rolling stock (see section below), you'll need to make some adjustments so MSTS doesn't get upset when it starts and looks through the activities but can't find various items. We'll discuss that in a minute.

You can extract the files from the first archive, coalrdp1.zip, by selecting them all and extracting them to ...\Train Simulator\Routes\, ensuring you've got Use folder names ticked in WinZip's Extract to dialogue box.

Be careful with extracting the files from the second archive, coalrdp2.zip, because the folder path in the archive is not correct - we want all the Texture files in this archive to go to ...\Routes\Coal Road\Textures\. webTrainSim opened Explorer at ...\Routes\Coal Road\Textures\ and dragged'n'dropped the files into this folder.

The next job was to move the Extras sub-folder out of the MSTS folder so its contents can be dealt with later. webTrainSim also moved the ACT files out of the Activities sub-folder to a temporary location until all the rolling stock is installed - this prevents MSTS getting the hiccups when it can't find consists and rolling stock used in these activities.

The Installme.bat ran without problem. MSTS was started and away we went. Even though there aren't any activities at this stage, Explore Route is available so choose a loco and go for a drive.

After an initial test run on the Coal Road, exit and, if you're a Train Store user, put the six default routes back into storage until required next time.

Below is the rolling stock required for the activities included with Coal Road. Gavin details various changes to both the locos and wagons in his readme.

In relation to changes to the locos (mainly revised ENGine files), webTrainSim has already made changes, mainly updates to the physics using Bob Boudoin's version 4.5 physics data for U.S. locos.

Once the wagons are installed, they'll be updated with the files included the Extras sub-folder of coalrdp1.zip.
