Line news September, 2006
<17-Sep-2006>: According to The Editor, webTrainSim has been excusing himself from an update here while he waits for rain in his local area - well, it could be a long time before that happens so he'd better just give some news on what he's noticed lately.
- When it's available in his local newsagent, webTrainSim purchases the Trains Magazine. The August and September issues have articles about the transportation by rail of containers from the west coast to the east coast of the U.S. A couple of times Trains has mentioned the mountains of containers in New Jersey that no one wants to take back to the west. So with a few minutes of free time, webTrainSim went looking for them on Live Local - and found them. The easiest way for you to see these container stacks at Long Beach CA and New Jersey is to click this link to access webTrainSim's Containers on East and West U.S. Coast Live Local collection. When you're viewing the containers in New Jersey, shift to Aerial view and zoom out a bit until they all look like rows of houses. At Long Beach, pan a bit to the east and you'll see the Queen Mary at her mooring.
- The following are items at Train-sim.com that caught webTrainSim's eye:
- Dwight Miller's EMD SD70ACe, mex70ace.zip (1.6Mb, 08-Sep-06), and the repaints that have followed.
- Dwight Mitchell's cabs: GE U-25 And U-50 Cabs, u25-50cb.zip (4.1Mb, 10-Sep-06); Generic GP38 Cab Update, gp38cmb1.zip (5.6Mb, 10-Sep-06); Generic GE U-Boat Cab, geuboatu.zip (4.7Mb, 10-Sep-06); Generic EMD Cab Upgrade, genemd2.zip (8.1Mb, 10-Sep-06); Generic GE Dash 8 Standard Cab, ge-8cab.zip (3.5Mb, 10-Sep-06); Generic EMD F45 Cab, f45cab-2.zip (3Mb, 10-Sep-06); Generic F40PH Cab, f40cabup.zip (5.3Mb, 10-Sep-06).
- You'll need sounds for the SD70ACe and you can download a set from The Means Locomotive Works.
- Alan Chambers has a collection of photos of U.K. steam he took in the late 1950's - early 1960's on his own site.
- Those with time on their hands have been finding all sorts of images on the Live Local maps as the aerial photography was taking place (e.g., an NWA flight coming into land, one of several in a Live Local collection). Trains have been spotted here and there - see this page on Bird's Eye Tourist and here's what webTrainSim has noticed at Waterloo station (zoom in and spot the Eurostars under the western trainshed). If you follow the lines along the Thames, several London suburban trains can be seen.
- Jobs to do: update activities and create some more for Wupper Express 10.1.
