Line news May, 2006

• <29-May-2006>: A short note to let you know that you can download webTrainSim's modified ENGine files for the Graphics15 electric locos from webTrainSim's download page (scroll down to the bottom for the ENG files section). That'll save some typing! Other snippets:

  • From memory there are a couple of times in the ICE 819 Dortmund to Koln activity that good braking is required because of a yellow or two that appear around a curve - you might want to tune up the ICE 403 (braking is perhaps a bit too heavy with these settings but they saved webTrainSim from passing a signal at danger). By the way, ICE sets can come into a platform at 60 km/hr rather than 30 km/hr as for other trainsets.
  • Windows Live Local, Microsoft's mapping service, was updated a few days ago to enable users to build a collection of locations which can be shared. Here's one such example, Amazing Journey through the Orient Express. U.S. trainsimmers have had access to a Bird's Eye view of a large number of U.S. cities and it's easy to locate many of the routes modelled in MSTS. Bird's Eye view is being gradually implemented for the U.K. but, with aerial views down to 60 metre resolution, there is lots to be seen in and around London.
  • The World Cup is nearly here and one program you might want to download is the Microsoft Football Scoreboard for World Cup 2006. webTrainSim will be keeping an eye on Australia's progress to see where he needs to add extra services to his Wupper Express activities! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oih, oih, oih!

• <22-May-2006>: How fast can a week go? Very quickly when your car's clutch has to be replaced (but things slow down when the bill arrives...).

  • The Train Store update to version 3.2.2 has been in the Train-sim.com library for a few days: trnst322.zip (960kb, 09-May-06). It simple to install but check the readme first.
  • Australian Add-ons for MSTS has several new models:
  • The Train-sim.com library has:
    • the latest full installation of Route Riter version 6.3.90, rr6390fu.zip (13.7Mb, 18-May-06). If you already have V6.3.55 or later, then go to the Steam4Me Route Riter update page to bring your version up to V6.3.90.
    • Steve Molloy has re-liveried Gavin Mclaughlan's 3D Australian C-class model into National Rail C508, c508nr.zip (9.7Mb, 21-May-06).
    • Jimi Ibbett has packaged the latest version of the 1959 London Tube rolling stock, lt59tsv3.zip (4.2Mb, 20-May-06), including a sixteen page guide.
    • Peter McCall has contributed a number of activities for Kerr McIntosh's Scottish Central route, such as Virgin Trains Edinburgh across the Forth bridge, sc6.zip (650kb, 18-May-06).
  • The-Train.de has MadMike's latest electric loco, BR 145 005-5, 14500510.zip (1.944Mb, 19-May-2006).
  • webTrainSim's ICE 819 Dortmund to Koln activity can be downloaded.

• <13-May-2006>: Here are a couple of things that webTrainSim has been doing and jobs to be started:

  • Tune-up of Graphics15 version 2 electric locos. See Small Fixes 18 - Graphics15 electric locos for the parameters to change in the BR 145 and BR 146 ENGine files. webTrainSim has assumed that Graphics15's BR 146 locos are the first in the series thus have 4 200kW. The new BR 146.1 locos are based on Bombardier's BR 185 and have more power (5 600kW).
  • The RE5 Koln to Oberhausen activity and ICE service #819 Dortmund to Koln to be created. Activity Editor, get ready to behave yourself. So as to experience Hibu's ICE-3 sounds from the cab, ICE service #819 will be created first.

• <09-May-2006>: Here are some snippets that have steamed their way across webTrainSim's screen in the past few days:

  • Graphics15 have set up a download section which has version 2 of earlier locos: BR 146 028-6 (DB Regio) g15_db146-028-6.zip (4.2Mb, 06-May-06), BR 145-007-1 (DB Cargo) g15_db145-007-1.zip (850kb, 06-May-06) and BR 145-CL-206 (Ruhrkohle AG) g15_145-CL_206.zip (721kb, 06-May-06), and three new locos: BR 146-01-1 (Metronom) g15_ME-146-01_1.zip (865kb, 06-May-06), BR 145-CL-001 (Rail4Chem) g15_r4c145-CL-001.zip (717kb, 06-May-06), BR 145-044-5 (Railion) g15_rail145-044-5.zip (901kb, 06-May-06). Graphics15 have no plans for any big projects at the moment and are going to finish off some little jobs.
  • There are a number of New South Wales flat wagons with various loads at Train-sim.com, one example being NSW NQAY With Strange Containers, nqaycont.zip (5Mb, 03-May-06), by Michael Thompson, Steven Molloy, and Gavin Mclaughlan.
  • Noticed at UKTrainsim.com, HSTs in three different liveries: InterCity Executive, BR_ICexecHST.zip (4.2Mb, 08-May-06), InterCity Swallow, BR_ICSwallowHST.zip (4.1Mb, 08-May-06), and Blue Grey, BREastCoastHST.zip (4.3Mb, 08-May-06).

• <05-May-2006>: webTrainSim's RE5 (Rhein Express) Oberhausen to Koln activity can now be downloaded.

• <04-May-2006>: webTrainSim has just completed a test run of his RE5 Rhein Express Oberhausen to Koln activity and it should be ready for download tomorrow - a bit late to write it up now.

  • In the RE5 activity, the driver is in control of a BR 101 so webTrainSim installed Hibu's new BR 101 sounds, Sound_BR101.zip (2.3Mb, 23-Feb-2006), and the small amount of work was worth it (as it was with his BR 146 sounds).
  • Hibu's ICE-3 sounds were also installed before testing RE5 Oberhausen to Koln, and, yes, they're certainly worth it. The sounds let you know that this train is capable of 300 km/hr.
  • webTrainSim has taken up using 7-Zip as his utility to unpack zip archives. Would you believe it's one of the few programs (Irfanview is the other) that will fit on a floppy! Even though the interface could be better, webTrainSim found a two-pane view is available under the View menu - the left pane contains the files in the archive and the right-hand pane can be opened as the destination folder - simply click Copy and the job is done.
