Line news June, 2003 <30-Jun-03>: Part 3 of Trainsimming Modern Italian Railways by Philip Chesters is now avaiable, mstsit30.zip (733kb, 29-Jun-03). This part details diesel locos and cargo movements. Gavin Mclaughlan has released a set of activities for the Coal Road route, coalact1.zip (934kb, 29-Jun-03) (N.S.W. and Freight Australia rolling stock is required). The Port City Car Company has modelled an armoured rail car, rbiwagen.zip (3.8Mb, 30-Jun-03) - their site is worth a visit to read about the detail and research they put into their modelling. That covers what caught webTrainSim's eye at Train-sim.com. Over at Simtrain-fr.org there a number of new locos, such as ST 001 Perox, ST 101 Titane, ST 301 (a cousin of the SNCF BB36000), and in particular the Re460 Simtrain, Re460-simtrain.zip (1.3Mb, 29-Jun-03); note this loco requires the Re465 BLS cab which you can download from the Cabines Européennes page at Simtrain-fr.org. Being the 175th anniversary of the first U.S. railway company, the Baltimore & Ohio, the summer (northern hemisphere) edition of the Classic Trains magazine is devoted to this railway (webTrainSim got out in the rain to get his copy today). The B&O Blue Train is described as well as other historical information. You can acquaint yourself too with the Chicago Great Western route (a poor road that lived by its wits) and what life was like in the cab of a steam loco on the Rio Grande.
<29-Jun-03>: More of Russell Beer's work, the Overland twelve carriage set featuring transparent windows and night-lit interiors; they're in download vsar_old.zip (1.6Mb, 28-Jun-03) at Train-sim.com. The phantom AI sound car, Invisocar, has been upgraded to version 2, invscar2.zip (585kb, 28-Jun-03). Mike Simpson has released Route Riter version 4.1.02 to fix the bug mentioned yesterday. Currently it's only available at UK Trainsim in Rrit4012.zip (6.24Mb, 28-Jun-03). webTrainSim noticed some new steam locos, Gruppo 851, rendered in 3D by Niels Picciotto, at Web & Treni, and, at Trenomania.it, several new electric locos (you'll find information on Italian Railways rolling stock at Amicitreni.it and Miaferrovia.it, as well as Philip Chesters' Trainsimming Italian Railways in the Train-sim.com library). <28-Jun-03>: There's another Russell Beer model in the Train-sim.com library, a Victorian Railways VTGX AFTRANS liquidfied gas wagon, vr_vtgx.zip (719kb, 27-Jun-03), along with a patch, vtgx_fix.zip (41kb, 27-Jun-03). Obrian Jones has extended Teemu Saukkonen's Central Valley route and it's available in three files (dialup users can now look away - one file is 272Mb, another 83Mb and the intro, 4Kb). The Dutch Seaview team have contributed the Dutch SeaView Serie 5000 Sprinter and Serie 6000 high speed locos, dsv6000.zip (4.5Mb, 27-Jun-03). There's a patch on the way for Mike Simpson's Route Riter, version 4.1.0, to fix a bug in the uncompress .w option (it only affects route builders in the main). <27-Jun-03>: Mike Simpson has upgraded Route Riter to version 4.1.0, Rrit4011.zip (5.9Mb, 26-Jun-03), and webTrainSim has only seen it available thus far at UK Trainsim - it's sure to be available from other sites soon. One new feature enables route builders to pack their route into any number of zips by simply specifying the size in megabytes of each. The first zip is always named something like MyRoute.zip and it's the only one we have to worry about when we install. At Train-sim.com Jim Duncan has released version 0.2 beta of his route, ATSF Marceline Subdivision. It's packed into five files, the first being atsfmar1.zip (1.9Mb, 26-Jun-03). webTrainSim would like to be able to say he's created a brilliant activity on the NEC portion of the NEC 4 route but either his train or another one keeps getting hit from behind so there's a lot of Oh well, back to the drawing board... <26-Jun-03>: dcm have contributed a TsTools II 50-page user guide (Word format) to the Train-sim.com library to supplement the TsTools II utility added yesterday (TsTools is for designing map-based terrains and placing objects). In answer to a question on the Train-sim forums, Chuck Schneider revealed that one of NALW's next projects involves re-packaging the Acela and HHP trainsets with improved cabs, sounds and physics to bring them up to a more prototypical level of appearance and performance.
<25-Jun-03>: At Train-sim.com Colin Cribb's New South Wales colour light signals, both two and single headed, has been updated to version 1.0a. Either download the patch, nswsgnlp.zip (23kb, 24-Jun-03), to upgrade if you already have version 1.0 or download the latest version with revised scripting, nswsgnla.zip (600kb, 24-Jun-03). Those who have the Cajon Pass route and have downloaded NALW's JetTrain might like to try the activity in bom_test.zip (908kb, 25-Jun-03). Finally a couple of tools for route builders, TsTools II, tst200.zip (1.2Mb, 24-Jun-03), and RefView.exe v0.1.3 beta, refview0.zip (2.3Mb, 24-Jun-03). You might like to browse some photos of the Rohr Turboliners or RTLs, one of the predecessors to the JetTrain. This page of photos is one of a collection on the Amtrak Photo Archive site. <24-Jun-03>: North American Loco Works (NALW) have released their model of Bombardier's JetTrain, bomb_jet.zip (22.4Mb, 23-Jun-03) at Train-sim.com. For more information and technical data, visit the Bombardier Transportation site (English; search on JetTrain is the easiest method) and see the Train-sim.com forum for some screenshots of NALW's model. At UK Trainsim there's a Tasmanian narrow-gauge K1 Garratt, k1install.zip (1.8Mb, 23-Jun-03). Remember we Australian trainsimmers on the east coast have to be up early at 0600 to have a chance of downloading from UK Trainsim. <23-Jun-03>: Okrasa Ghia, author of XTracks, has put together a short introductory tutorial on creating objects, texturing them and manipulating them. The tute includes information on file formats and tools to use; it's in objintro.zip (56kb, 22-Jun-03) at Train-sim.com. Also, Robert Slater has an activity pack for LGV Med, LGV Sleeper, in lgvsleep.zip (77kb, 23-Jun-03). His sleeper train is made up of payware carriages but you can substitute free rolling stock. See his readme for other required rolling stock, much of which you'll have if you have run other LGV Med activities or have another French route. Ville Saarelainen has created an alternative set of startup videos, strtvids.zip (23Mb, 23-Jun-03). <22-Jun-03>: Another route appears in the Train-sim.com library, the Santa Fe Marceline Sub by Jim Duncan. There are five files in the download, the largest being 19Mb - look for files atsfmarx.zip (21-Jun-03) where "x" is 1 to 5 (note it's a beta version). The Santa Fe Railway - Missouri Division site has information about the current status of the real route. Robert Reedy has some activities for the A Dual Fantasy Railroad route, adfmrm01.zip (99kb, 21-Jun-03) and those looking for a commuter train activity for NEC 4 can download wshtnmet.zip (96kb, 21-Jun-03) (Red Rattlers MP54 trainset is required). <21-Jun-03>: Trainsimfrance.net is back on the air and webTrainSim noticed a patch there for the 241P 17 steam loco. That implies there's a 241P for download! The 4-8-2 241P was another compound loco (the 231K was talked about a few days ago) improved using Andre Chapelon's thermodynamic principles and quite capable of hauling an express 20-carriage consist. West Coast Route bulletin 7 from Peter Gaut shows the route is now past Geelong (all the yards are finished) and it's on its way to Waurn Ponds then further once Peter gets some more information. There are some more Steve Spivey CSX Transportation box cars at the Train-sim.com library: CSX Transportation 50 foot box car #504010, csxbox34.zip (815kb, 20-Jun-03), and CSX Transportation 50 foot hi-Cube box car #161830, csxbox35.zip (740kb, 20-Jun-03). If you get problems with the MBTA route, it may be due to a faulty installation of XTracks. Installing XTracks is one of those jobs when webTrainSim likes to use WinZip's drag'n'drop feature - in Explorer, open the Shapes sub-folder under MSTS' Global folder, select all the files in the zip, unselect the ones such as the readmes, then drag'n'drop all the .S and .SD files into the Shapes sub-folder. webTrainSim tries to avoid confusion with this rule: when there's a folder path in the zip archive, take the last folder name in the path as being the destination folder into which the files are to be extracted. <20-Jun-03>: There's a Canadian National route, CN Blackfoot and Vegreville Subdivisions, at Train-sim.com. It's a semi-realistic route that covers over 140 miles of single line CN main track from North Battleford, Saskatchewan to Innisfree, Alberta, Canada - there are seven files in all, black1.zip to black7.zip. There appears to be one or two problems with the MBTA version 3 route mentioned yesterday - keep an eye out for fixes. There's a new virtual railway at Australian Virtual Railway, Vroege.Biz is a new MSTS site that's just beginning and here's the real Rhaetian Railway (Rhaetische Bahn) site - you'll see the Albula line shown on one of the maps. <19-Jun-03>: At the Train-sim.com library, webTrainSim noticed these today: a Global Tsection tool by Martyn Griffin, tsec12.zip (1.9Mb, 18-Jun-03), a set of New South Wales colour signals, nswsgnls.zip (593kb, 18-Jun-03), and Joseph Fortier's MBTA route version 3 (in 4 files, varying from 2.4Mb to 58Mb). The Northern Denmark route version 4, a real route going from Frederikshavn to Aarhus, has been released at www.gameaddons.dk (an 80Mb download). And at Koroka Downloads, there's a new tram route, Linie 5, modelling a line in Cologne (35Mb, including trams). <18-Jun-03>: webTrainSim has zipped all the paths he's thus far created for the NEC 4 and Via Trenomania AV routes (they can be downloaded here). There are nearly 50 paths on NEC 4 and about 30 on Via Trenomania AV. They're all driveable paths, that is, once you've extracted them from the zip archive into ...\USA1A\Paths\ and ...\NORDIDA\Paths\ respectively, they'll show up in Explore Mode in MSTS. Some of them won't get you very far, for example, Ivy City Yards to Washington Union, but others are longer, such as those on the Baltimore LRV (e.g., Woodbury to BWI Airport), New Carrollton to Judiciary Square on the Washington Metro, and the Mike Hunt Ceramics siding (Philadelphia) to Wilsmere Yard on the CSX Sub. Sorry the NEC 4 paths haven't been documented whereas the Via Trenomania ones have been. With help from Vince's schematic map in the NEC 4 Routes Docs folder, Chris Bogley's NEC Guide, necguide.zip, and John Krawczyk's NEC4 maps, nec40map.zip, you should be able to explore NEC 4 and get an appreciation for the amount of trackage Vince has managed to incorporate into a fascinating route.
<17-Jun-03>: The following is some rolling stock that webTrainSim has downloaded to run on various sections of the NEC 4 route (excepting the default MSTS trainsets such as the Acela Express and Metroliner on the Amtrak NEC): SEPTA E60c trainset, septae60.zip (3.1Mb, 09-Mar-03; e60c_42.zip required for cab), Don Shriner's CSX SD40-2 locos csx8119.zip (3.6Mb, 20-May-03) and csx8252.zip (3.6Mb, 20-May-03) (there are plenty of others), Sounder carriages for Washington Metro (on lease from Seattle), sndbdier.zip (786kb, 20-Nov-01), Type 6 and 7 Boston LRVs to use on Baltimore LRV, type6.zip (6.5Mb, 03-Jan-03) and type7.zip (9.6Mb, 21-Nov-02) (see Small Fixes - Trams for some hints on aliasing the cab). All these downloads are available from the Train-sim.com library. All we need now are some keen designers to give us a Baltimore LRV, a Washington Metro trainset and a MARC trainset or two. <16-Jun-03>: A news snippet about the West Coast Route: the Geelong yards are now completed and the standard gauge as far as Gheringhap. There are a number of new additions at Trenomania.it: new 3D modelled ETR 200 and ETR 480 trainsets (see under Locomotiva). At AllFreeNet.it, there are also a number of new models in the Locomotiva category: FS E636x loco pack V1.0, a repainted Thalys V2 by Ruben Scholten, and FS E428 3a Serie loco. <15-Jun-03>: It was remiss of webTrainSim not to mention yesterday the language packs for Train Store - they're available in Dutch, French and German and available from the Train-sim.com library (search for trnst2*.zip; each pack is about 100kb). The Tehachapi Pass is just about the busiest section of single-track in the world, carrying about forty trains per day. It has a fascinating history, both in terms of how it managed to be constructed and the famous rail companies which have run their trains over it. So download the Tehachapi Pass guide, tehguide.zip (1.6Mb, 14-Jun-03), and enjoy Chris Bogley's write up of history and trains, along with a schematic map (look for the loop at Walong) and photos. Jonathan Lewis has released version 3 of his Alpine Tunnel route from Fisher, Colorado, to Baldwin, Colorado, atline.zip (46Mb, 14-Jun-03). At Simtrain-fr.org you'll find the Rame Réversible Régionale carriage set in Lorraine livery, rrrlorraine.exe (1.39Mb, 13-Jun-03); put a BB 66400, 67300, 67400 or 16500 at the front, and you've got a modern push-pull trainset. <14-Jun-03>: Tony Formoso's Train Store version 2, trnstr20.zip (2.3Mb, 13-Jun-03), is available in the Train-sim.com library. There are many new features and, as Tony posted in one of the forums, Yes, you can install it over an existing V1.1 installation, but this doesn't absolve you from reading the readme! (Getting Started.pdf in the zip archive). One feature that webTrainSim put to use today is the expanded Maintenance Mode facility which enables you to now choose the consists and rolling stock you think you may want to use for a particular route in the Activity Editor, for example. Once you've made your services as part of an activity you're creating, you can put these maintenance mode consists and rolling stock back into store by using Prepare in Simulation mode. There is much more, including the use of lot numbers to classify your rolling stock and consists into convenient categories, such as DMU, 50sSteam, EMDdiesels, and so on. And a bit of house-keeping - to have this page load a bit faster, only the last four or five days of line news is here - access earlier news here or with the link below. <13-Jun-03>: Somewhere webTrainSim saw a post that perhaps things were slowing down with MSTS 2 on the horizon - hmm, oh well, here's a list of new models for you to think about adding to your roundhouse and countryside. At Trenomania.it under Locomotiva, you'll find these new additions: SBB Ce68 14253 - Coccodrillo, E623.600 & pABZ623.600, D341 Prima & Seconda Serie. At AllFreeNet.it, SBB Ce68 14253, diesel HLD62 loco, the RENFE 592 Atomico trainset, FS E428 2a Serie and steam loco FS GR835 can all be found in the Locomotiva category. At Lignes Francaises pour Train Simulator, webTrainSim's correspondent from Europe recommends the La Bosse version 1 route by Henri Verpiot and Ligne du Morvan Trajan route by Alain Cheuton, the latter although only single line through the centre of France, has some well-designed hand-built small stations. The Rhones-Alpes route has a download home but unfortunately an unpractical download size of 250Mb! At Train-sim.com Kevin Arceneux has repackaged some of Steve Spivey's box cars: Conrail crpbox.zip (9.3Mb, 12-Jun-03), Union Pacific upp1.zip (11.8Mb, 12-Jun-03), Norfolk Southern nspbox.zip (10.7Mb, 12-Jun-03) and CSX csxbox1.zip (12.7Mb, 12-Jun-03), csxbox2.zip (8.4Mb, 12-Jun-03). Last but not least, Tony Formoso's Train Store will be available in a day or two in Version 2. Tony's posted a list of new features and improvements on the Train-sim forum and webTrainSim will be downloading and installing it as soon as possible. So things are quietening down, are they? <12-Jun-03>: The Australian signals pack (with Victorian aspects) is now available in its full, revised version, ausigv11.zip (314kb, 11-Jun-03) from Train-sim.com. The writeup (kindly received from a fellow trainsimmer living in the Baltimore area) is now posted to give us all a better picture of rail activity on the NEC, CSX Camden Sub, the Washington Metro and Baltimore LRV. <11-Jun-03>: There's an activity, Springwood To Penrith, for Blue Mountains 2 at Train-sim.com, springwd.zip (224Kb, 10-Jun-03). See the readme for the extra rolling stock required. Also at Train-sim.com is Edouard Staniczek's SNCF Pacific 231K 8, 231k8.zip (10Mb, 10-Jun-03). By the way, the European Railways magazine of April this year had a good article on the French compound steam locos and their development by engineer, Andre Chapelon - his knowledge produced some remarkable horsepower improvements. 231K 8 still runs on specialist occasions in the north of France. Another steam loco of note is ATSF 3751, atsf3751.zip (2.4Mb, 10-Jun-03), restored by the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society and used on excursions. The NEC V4.0 Route Maps by John Krawczyk are on webTrainSim's list of downloads, nec40map.zip (2.6Mb, 10-Jun-03) - in schematic form these maps show the Washington DC Metro, CSX, Amtrak, Baltimore Light Rail and SEPTA trackage contained in NEC 4. You'll see under Reference sites a number of maps which webTrainSim has already found. And there'll be a page up in a day or two that gives a fellow trainsimmer's first-hand account of what happens on the rails around Baltimore and Washington. Finally for today, Kuju have released a press release on MSTS 2, accompanied by a couple of screenshots. <10-Jun-03>: One of webTrainSim's favourite locos, the F59PHI, is available in four new liveries - AMT, West Coast Express, Sounder and Metrolink - in f59pack.zip (2.8Mb, 09-Jun-03) from the Train-sim.com library. This is how webTrainSim tuned up the Amtrak F59PHI. Edouard Staniczek has completed his SNCF 231 Pacific steam locomotive, 231k8.exe (9.8Mb), and it's available for download from his site. A reminder (to myself included) that there are many well-designed MSTS models available from the MSTS library at AvSim so it's worth visiting there from time to time to see what's new. <09-Jun-03>: Michael Vone (author of Step by Step Guide to Route Building for MSTS) has released version 2.1 of his Albula Line route and accompanying rolling stock update. Both are available from the Train-sim.com library: MValb21.zip (15.6Mb, 08-Jun-03) and RhBpack2.zip (15Mb, 08-Jun-03). For more information about Michael's route, see his page at Avsim. Note you need to have version 2 of the Albula Line and Rhaetische Bahn rolling stock installed (MValb2.zip 18.7Mb, 10-Jan-02; RhBpack.zip 18Mb, 10-Jan-02). The Australian signalling set mentioned yesterday has been upgraded to version 1.1, ausign11.zip (90kb, 08-Jun-03). There have been some updates to rolling stock available from MS Trainstop and AllFreeNet, so visit these sites if you're interested in Belgian/Dutch or Italian rolling stock respectively.
<08-Jun-03>: At the Train-sim.com library, you'll find a set of signals obeying the Victorian rail rules of 1987, ausignal.zip (268kb, 07-Jun-03), and a cab by Kenji Kimura for Italian Railways ALn663 DMU trainset, fsaln663.zip (2Mb, 07-Jun-03). The FS ALe426-506 TAF EMU trainset (from the cab above, below) can be downloaded from AllFreenet.it - look under Locomotiva for the file titled FS ALe426-506 TAF to download FS_Ale426-506-TAF.zip (1.99Mb, 28-Oct-02).
<07-Jun-03>: A little bit of nostalgia at the Train-sim.com library: New York and Atlantic Railway EMD MP15AC #155, nya155.zip (14.5Mb, 06-Jun-03) and Italian locomotive GR 741 in three different models with cab by Kenji Kimura, fs_gr741.zip (8.9Mb, 06-Jun-03). The Rheilffordd Ffestiniog Railway route, taking in the spectacular scenery of the Snowdonia National Park between Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog, is in alpha version and you can read about it at www.festrail.co.uk.
<06-Jun-03>: The Train-sim.com library today features a couple of tools and maps and information manuals. One tool by Martyn Griffin converts a USAPhotoMaps way point file into a MSTS marker file for use by the Route Editor, waypntv2.zip (371kb, 05-Jun-03). Then on the information side, there's a Sandpatch route schematic map, spmapv10.zip (68kb, 05-Jun-03), info about the PRR Middle Division route, prrman.zip (1.6Mb, 05-Jun-03), and a timetable for commuter trains on the ADFRR, adfrail.zip (500kb, 05-Jun-03).
<05-Jun-03>: There's some news of Michael Greenhill's route, VicTrack Route, currently at version 0.4 alpha, at the UK Trainsim forum. When doing some info-gathering about Amtrak's Ivy City loco maintenance facility, webTrainSim came across this photo of two, clean, shiny Acela Expresses, #2008 & #2033. The WCR R711 steam loco is now available for download from Australian Add-ons to MSTS - see some posts at the Train-sim.com forum.
<04-Jun-03>: Not a great deal of news today but webTrainSim did notice a Western Australian grain hopper wagon in the Train-sim.com library. While searching for some specs on trams - webTrainSim is creating an activity or two on the Baltimore LRV and Baltimore-Washington MARC sections of NEC 4 - he came across Lightrail Central and information at the Siemens site, including info about Melbourne's new Combino trams. <03-Jun-03>: Some downloads that could be interesting at the Train-sim.com library: VIA Rail F40PH-2 locos in promotional logos (e.g., Home Hardware, CBC Radio Canada), viapromo.zip (6.9Mb, 02-Jun-03); an update to Kurt Kamminer's Seaview Express trainsets to fix some sound bugs and adjust the ENGine files for use with the Raildriver control, sve_upd2.zip (252kb, 02-Jun-03); additional ENGine files for the Invisocar (e.g., Dash 9, doodlebug, SD40-2), invisadd.zip (732kb, 02-Jun-03). wewebTrainSim has made some prototypical adjustments to the MBTA Type 6 and Type 7 LRVs - the new parameters are in Small Fixes Trams. <02-Jun-03>: Robert Fontaine (the Genesis Man) has finished his Amtrak P42DC locos in Phase III livery. They're available in a complete pack, amt3pack.zip (2.7Mb, 01-Jun-03) or separately, amt29.zip (700kb, 01-Jun-03), amt30.zip (700kb, 01-Jun-03), amt31.zip (700kb, 01-Jun-03), amt32.zip (700kb, 01-Jun-03). You need Robert's P42 cab, genp42_2.zip (1.1Mb, 19-Mar-03) and the Maple Leaf Tracks GE sounds, gesounds.zip (3.5Mb, 01-Sep-02), each of which are also available at Train-sim.com. Greg McCarty has released V1.2 of his Whitefish Widowmaker activity for Marias Pass 3.1 to fix some bugs in the earlier version in relation to some of the included rolling stock, ww31v12.zip (31Mb, 01-Jun-03). webTrainSim has just started thinking about an activity or two around Baltimore on NEC 4, for example along the light rail line. It's amazing how much Vince and his team have put into this route: there's 1186 Km of route trackage to keep us all out of mischief for some time! Chris Bogley's NEC 4 guide, neguide2.zip (9kb, 02-May-03), is an invaluable doc to have on hand.
<01-Jun-03>: Some interesting downloads at Train-sim.com today: a USAPhotoMaps utility to convert data to MSTS marker files, rnwcon10.zip (74kb, 31-May-03; note USAPhotoMaps V2.12.2 is required), the FRAPs movie maker for route builders to show off their new creation, fraps.zip (102kb, 31-May-03), Philip Chesters' next installment in Trainsimming Italian Railways, mstsit20.zip (1.6Mb, 31-May-03) detailing DMUs, EMUs and carriages, and the Crazy Day activity on the NEC with default rolling stock, crazyday.zip (11kb, 31-May-03). A couple of threads may relevant to you, a few notes on the Blue Mountains 2 route and a DEM source for Canada & South America. There's also a few notes here, too. About | ContactwebTrain Sim was, until recently, part of my webWiz Online site at http://webdotwiz.tripod.com. Due to a reduction in free web space by Tripod, these pages have had to be posted at their own site, http://webDotTrainSim.tripod.com. Not such a bad thing because there's now 20Mb for Train Sim! Email me at info@webDotTrainsim.com if you have questions or comments. I'll try to answer as best I can. Certainly post me if any step-by-step instructions on various how-to pages need clarification. |
