Led by CC 72000, our train from Lyon Perrache arrives at Grenoble.
Led by CC 72000, our train from Lyon Perrache arrives at Grenoble.

• <31-Aug-03>: Not a great deal to report today, but those thinking about the Rhone-Alpes route should take advantage of some activities (Culoz-Lyon in charge of a TGV PSE, Annecy-Grenoble, Chambery-St Andre-Le-Gaz, and Lyon-Grenoble in charge of a Sybic heading a consist of TER Corail carraiges), the list of required rolling stock (as a Word doc in MaterielRA.doc) and list of consists (consists_RA.zip) at site.voila.fr/actmsts.

• <30-Aug-03>: The Australian Addons site has Russell Beer's Vinelander carraige set, AU_VineSleepr_MSTS1_Setup.exe (390kb) and a VR AX passenger set, AU_vrAX_MSTS1Setup.exe (446kb). At Train-sim.com Jim England has packaged several of his repaints, such as the Star Trek - The Next Generation set of twelve freight wagons, sttngset.zip (4.9Mb, 29-Aug-03), and the Rock Band Boxcar set of fourteen wagons, rockbset.zip (5.8Mb, 29-Aug-03).

• <29-Aug-03>: A set of one of webTrainSim's favourite locos makes its appearance in the Train-sim.com library today, namely the FS Trenitalia E402b, fs_e402b.zip (11.2Mb, 28-Aug-03). These electric locos have their own cab and sounds. Since the package comes with a self-installer, webTrainSim is unsure where the sounds are installed; refer to E402p, E402a loco cab and Suono Italiano sound files for any help if you need it. The E402b cab is by Pek and his site is worth a visit from time to time. There are a couple of activities, one on the Blue Mountains route, WCR R711 Fantrip, r711_fan.zip (152kb, 28-Aug-03), and the other on the Canton Railroad, Summer Day, can04aug.zip (1.1Mb, 28-Aug-03). The 'roos haven't begun hopping out onto the road around webTrainSim's area yet, but you can certainly put them into Phil Skene's Dragon Mountain Pass route with Larry Mullett's add-on, d_to_k.zip (84kb, 28-Aug-03).

• <28-Aug-03>: Phil Skene has posted instructions to solve the problem on his Dragon Mountain Pass route at the Lucky Strike mine, dmp_au5.zip (2kb, 27-Aug-03). As well at Train-sim.com, Bob Pickering has a preview list of rolling stock for his activities on NEC 4, necsspp1.zip (262kb, 27-Aug-03). webTrainSim has tidied up some info about the Rhone-Alpes route. That hasn't helped webTrainSim, however. After making a couple of small changes to his Lyon to Grenoble activity, he ran up the back of a TGV Reseau set. As they say, Back to the drawing board.

• <27-Aug-03>: Bill Hemb has contributed more classic U.S. trainsets: GM Train Of Tomorrow, gmtot.zip (13.3Mb, 26-Aug-03), Chesapeake & Ohio George Washington, cogw.zip (16.1Mb, 26-Aug-03), Baltimore & Ohio Capitol Limited, bocptllt.zip (15.6Mb, 26-Aug-03), and Wabash Blue Bird, bluebird.zip (14.7Mb, 26-Aug-03), to the Train-sim.com library. Some people have had troubles on the Dragon Mountain route near the Lucky Strike mine - see this post at the Train-sim forum for a solution. webTrainSim has added his Newark-Philadelphia activity on NEC 4 and Chambery-Amberieu and Lyon Perrache-Grenoble activities on Rhone-Alpes to the downloads section. webTrainSim has found the AI dispatcher/controller doesn't handle the AI traffic very well from the Amberieu direction and wants to make a couple of changes to the Lyon-Grenoble activity. However, if you've just downloaded the Rhone-Alpes route, at least you have some paths so you can do some exploring.

CC 72000 on a test run from Culoz towards Bellegarde (Rhone-Alpes route). Shame you can't hear Belphegor's sounds in action!
CC 72000 on a test run from Culoz towards Bellegarde (Rhone-Alpes route). Shame you can't hear Belphegor's sounds in action!

• <26-Aug-03>: After installing Belphegor's CC 72000 sound set, soundcc72000.zip (3.13Mb, 01-Aug-03), webTrainSim climbed into the cab and heard all sorts of beeps, burps, alarms, whistles and bells; the external sounds are amazing, too! As well, there seems to be a short somewhere in the wiring. An addendum to yesterday's news on the Rhone Alpes route: there are activities with this route but no consists so that makes it a bit hard (that was the case with the copy which webTrainSim received). A quick and dirty solution is to move all the ACT files out of the route's Activities folder except one activity and then use ConBuilder to substitute rolling stock you have. The point is you need at least one activity present to be able to Explore the route. Try site.voila.fr/actmsts for some other activities and browse the Simtrain-fr.org forum for further assistance. webTrainSim will upload a couple of activities tomorrow to help out. Rich Garber has put together his Everything You Wanted to Know about Canton Railroad and Were too Afraid to Ask - see this page at his site.

• <25-Aug-03>: Pierre Porcheron's TER Rhone Alpes route, which webTrainSim has been driving around on for a while, is now available for download in reasonable-sized chunks (four 20Mb files and one 16Mb file in WinRAR compressed format) from PLM.MSTS. Another French route is Ligne du Grand Sud Ouest by Philippe Rubato and it can be downloaded from this page at PLM.MSTS (three 18Mb files and one 8Mb file in WinRAR compressed format). At the Train-sim.com library, there's Gary Ball's candy-liveried N.S.W. class 48s, 48candy.zip (3.4Mb, 24-Aug-03); Henry Triplett has a couple of sets of activities for NEC 4, AEM7 Default Activities Series, aem7-def.zip (145kb, 24-Aug-03), and The Washington IRT Subway Series, wash-irt.zip (179kb, 24-Aug-03); Dick Cowen has brought an overworked Canton RR F3A back to life, ctnf3501.zip (1.8Mb, 24-Aug-03); and Peter Nijmegen has contributed a Dutch Seaview Railways Golsdorf 380, dsv_g380.zip (5.5Mb, 24-Aug-03), and nineteen freight wagons for the Dutch Seaview route, dsvcargo.zip (6.9Mb, 24-Aug-03). And, phew, webTrainSim has started tuning up his BB 67439 loco.

• <24-Aug-03>: The Dragon Mountain Pass Railway route (the route with attitude and a good diversion from the usual) is now available from the Train-sim.com library in dialup-friendly sized files: dmp_au1.zip (6.1Mb, 23-Aug-03), dmp_au2.zip (3.9Mb, 23-Aug-03), dmp_au3.zip (6.2Mb, 23-Aug-03) and dmp_au4.zip (8.7Mb, 23-Aug-03); maps are in dmp_mp.zip (974kb, 23-Aug-03). Joseph Fortier's MBTA route (Boston, MA, to Providence, RI) is now at version 5; it's in four files, starting with mbta_v51.zip mbta_v51.zip.zip (30Mb, 23-Aug-03). Peter Nijmegen of the Dutch Seaview Team has contributed crowd noise from the fans of the Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam teams, dsvsoc.zip (573kb, 23-Aug-03).

• <23-Aug-03>: Phil Skene has posted on the Train-sim.com forum that his Dragon Mountaon Pass Railway route has been updated with Australian scenery and he's set the route somewhere in northern New South Wales. He's adapted the landcape to what we Australians are familiar with (plenty of brown and some winter green) and done away with winter snow (only some of us see, or have seen, snow). Jim England has repainted two of Mark Toland's 250 tonne maintenance-of-way cranes, one in Canadian National Red, cnredcrn.zip (884kb, 22-Aug-03), the other in Canadian National Orange, cnorgcrn.zip (868kb, 22-Aug-03). Also at the Train-sim.com library you'll find another sound set by Michael Sinclair, a Heavy Rain Replacement, rain.zip (2.3Mb, 23-Aug-03), designed to be in step with your loco's speed. webTrainSim will be keeping an eye on the Italien 83 site for a Z 23500 trainset, predicted for September.

• <22-Aug-03>: At Australian Add-ons for MSTS, you'll find that all Australian carriages have been updated with more realistic physics. In particular look for Richard Lauder's package of thirty different Victorian carriages, AU_TotalvicPass_MSTS1_Setup.exe (4.57Mb), from work originally done by Michael Thompson. At Train-sim.com, Matthew Davis has a repaint of James Brook's S-class diesel in West Coast livery, wcr_s.zip (1.3Mb, 21-Aug-03). webTrainSim noticed a couple of new additions at TheTrain.de: a Class 60033 diesel loco in British Steel livery and the Cityshuttle S-Bahn trainset.

• <21-Aug-03>: A quiet day at the Train-sim.com library compared to yesterday with some texture files by Dick Cowen for Canton RR rolling stock to give them a weathered look, ctn-wthn.zip (5.0Mb, 20-Aug-03), and updates to the CSX CW44AC packs, starting with pack number 1, csxac_11.zip (618kb, 20-Aug-03) to fix problems with the couplers. webTrainSim has a few small fixes for the CC 6500 locos and the Z 20900 trainset using data from specs at Rail 21.

• <20-Aug-03>: More classic U.S. trainsets have appeared in the Train-sim.com library from the work of Train Artisan, Dick Cowen and Bill Hemb. New York Central's 20th Century Limited began the New York-Chicago service in late 1902, promoted as a 20-hour train for the 900 mile trip. Travel time was reduced to 18 hours in 1905 for a number of years. Bill Hemb has contributed two diesel hauled models, one pre-World War II, nyc20the.zip (16.4Mb, 19-Aug-03), and the second, post-WW II, nyc20th.zip (18.2Mb, 19-Aug-03). Dome cars were introduced on many U.S. trainsets to attract custom and one of the most unique was the Skytop with its large expanse of glass on the Milwaukee Hiawatha, hiawatha.zip (16.8Mb, 19-Aug-03). Others in the library from today include the Frisco/MKT Texas Special, txspcl.zip (16.9Mb, 19-Aug-03), the Erie Lackawanna Phoebe Snow, elphobsn.zip (14.8Mb, 19-Aug-03), and the Lousivlle & Nashville Humming Bird, lnhmgbd.zip (17.7Mb, 19-Aug-03). Trains Magazine have produced a special edition, Dream Trains, detailing the U.S. streamliners 1946-1956, and their winter 2002 edition of Classic Trains was devoted to the 100th anniversary of the 20th Century Limited, Broadway Limited and Golden State Limited.

Double-deck EMU Z20900 trainsets are being used to move the ski crowds until the new TER 2N trainsets become available.

• <19-Aug-03>: The first of five files of Bruce Bridges' Conrail Indianapolis Line route (updated to version 2) is in the Train-sim.com library (the remainder should be there tomorrow). Note that activities for the earlier version won't work on version 2. A number of alternative splash screens are appearing, the latest being the Burlington Northern Splash Screens, bn.zip (11Mb, 18-Aug-03) by Scott Fitzgerald. Pete Abrams has another freight pack, this one being eight boxcars in Kansas City Southern livery, kcspk1.zip (5.9Mb, 18-Aug-03). Jim England has painted two New York Central CPA24-4 locos into grey passenger livery, nycebgry.zip (2.3Mb, 18-Aug-03). The RER SNCF Z 20900 and ZR 20900 trainset in Transilien livery pictured above is available from TrainSimFrance.net in download packz20900.zip (18.6Mb) in the Automotrice section (sounds from Belphegor, by the way).

The FS ETR500 Politensione trainset mentioned yesterday at AllFreeNet.it is also available from Trenomania.it.

• <15-Aug-03>: There's not a lot to report on at the Train-sim.com library today, probably due to the blackout but you'll find the Chicago and North Western freight pack number one consisting of nine 50 and 60 foot boxcars, cnwpk1.zip (5.9Mb, 14-Aug-03). At AllFreeNet.it there's Salvatore Valese's ETR 500 Politensione trainset (5.4Mb, 13-Aug-03) and a cab for the E636 riqualificata (1.7Mb, 13-Aug-03). There was a message from Mike Simpson on the UK Trainsim forum a day or two ago regarding the use of Route Riter V4.2.0 on non-English language versions of Windows when uncompressing .S and .W files, decimal notation not being handled correctly for different countries.

• <02-Aug-03>: A couple of downloads that webTrainSim noticed at Train-sim.com include the CSX CW44AC pack number 4, csxac_4.zip (2.8Mb, 01-Aug-03) (note that NALW's GE Megapack V2 is required) and a Dash 9 night cab, d9-night.zip (3.9Mb, 01-Aug-03) by Richard Haagsma. Keep an eye out for Robert Fontaine's night cabs for his P42DC locos, in both tan and grey, in the next day or two. Bernard Barthalay's explanation of how to get better GE sounds is finished and webTrainSim tried his P42DC SMS files today in Amtrak P42DC #802 - compressor, dynamic braking, brake squeal and rumble all add to the loco's engine sounds when you're outside the cab.

• <01-Aug-03>: Stew Winston has contributed WestRail P Class diesel loco #2006, .zip (, 31-Aug-03), to the Train-sim.com library. And for those looking for models of famous passenger sets, such as the Southern Pacific Golden State, spgoldst.zip (15.6Mb, 31-Jul-03), or the Rio Grande Ski Train, rgskitrn.zip (23.2Mb, 31-Jul-03), won't be disappointed with Bill Hemb's renditions. Bernard Barthalay has kindly contributed work he's been doing on Better sounds for the GE C44-9W; SMS files and documentation will be available for download in a day or two.
